Terminology work

With years of hands-on experience using and expanding terminology databases for clients, I know how valuable a well-maintained corporate terminology base can be. It ensures clarity and consistency across all corporate communications.

Consistent corporate terminology – Your benefits

  • Authors use the right language every time
  • Consistency across brochures, manuals, websites, specifications, emails, and other text
  • Fewer misunderstandings and translation errors
  • Improved reader comprehension

Whether you already have a terminology database or need one created, I can support you. I can build and populate a new database, or update an existing database as writing projects progress, ensuring your database stays current and becomes a reliable resource across your company.

Building a terminology base – The steps

  • Choose terminology software (from simply an Excel worksheet to SDL MultiTerm, MemoQ Termbase, TermWeb, TermWiki, Acrolinx, etc.)
  • Define the database fields: definition, part of speech, subject area, translations, and more
  • Extract terminology from existing documents
  • Identify commonly used terms, differentiating them from similar ones
  • Collaborate with engineers, service staff, sales teams, and production staff to ensure accuracy
  • Write precise definitions with usage examples
  • Translate terms into the required languages
