Documentation that works

For users, few things are more frustrating than manuals that are incomplete, unclear, or fail to provide the answers they need.

For companies, poor documentation can mean:

  • Legal risks if the safety information is incomplete or incorrect
  • Higher costs if users turn to service hotlines for help
  • Damage to the corporate image if manuals fall short of expectations for quality and clarity

With over 20 years of experience as a Documentation Engineer for industrial measuring equipment, I create operating and service manuals that meet safety requirements and deliver clear, reliable guidance for installation, operation, and maintenance

Safety first – ANSI regulations
I apply the internationally recognized ANSI safety standards along with the SAFE method to ensure that the risks identified in risk assessments are clearly highlighted. I can also work with other safety standards on request.

Controlled authoring – Saving time and money
I apply the internationally recognized ANSI safety standards along with the SAFE method to ensure that the risks identified in risk assessments are clearly highlighted. I can also work with other safety standards on request.

Style guide – For a uniform corporate identity
I follow your established corporate style guidelines. If none exist, I will create and maintain a style guide, apply it consistently, and deliver an updated version with every assignment.

Document structure – Built for the reader
Operating manuals are reference works, not books to be read cover to cover. I organize information so that:

  • Safety instructions appear wherever needed, not just at the beginning of the manual
  • A well-structured index ensures users can find what they are looking for
  • Numbered instructions with illustrations and a description of the result assure readers that the task was completed correctly
  • Itemized bullet lists cut down on reading time and improve comprehension

Tools of the trade – CMS and more
I have expert knowledge of Microsoft Word and docuglobe, a content management system. I am also eager to learn and work with other tools such as your content management system (CMS), InDesign, FrameMaker, or any other tool you prefer. In addition, AI has become a helpful tool when it comes to checking for consistency, grammar, style and appropriate formulations.

Terminology – More than just words
Consistent terminology improves reader comprehension, reduces misunderstandings, and minimizes the risk of incorrect translations. I bring years of hands‑on experience in building and expanding terminology databases:

  • Already have a database? I will keep it current and expand it with new terms.
  • Need one created? I will design and deliver one as part of your project. I can also extract terminology and enrich entries with definitions, usage notes, and meta information.
